Food for the less fortunate!!

At Present & Future - Free Food For The Less Fortunate:

Often lost in the shuffle are those who don't have the means to gather with family members for a good meal. Our mission is to feed America's hungry through a network of our Tribal Members Food Source Pantry and engage our county in the fight to end hunger. Many of the less fortunate families receiving the food have young children who otherwise may not have a food to eat, "Those little kids we see out there like that; it's heartbreaking," said our Chief Eye of Eagle.

That's where at least this local group -- a longtime area resident, Chief Eye of Eagle and the Alapaha River Band of Cherokee, Inc., a nonprofit organization -- has come forward to help, providing free food for those who need it. For the past years, Chief Eye of Eagle has been giving food, clothing, etc, etc, to the less fortunate in this area (Hamilton County) from his own home at 2735 NW 61st Ave., Jennings, Florida 32053.

Chief George, Eye of Eagle Burke and his "Tribal Associates aimed at abolishing hunger of our less fortunate: Are attempting the difficult task of putting an end to hunger for our people." Food will be provided by The Alapaha River Band of Cherokee, Inc.

This food will be given on Saturday, May 12, 2007, between 12 noon and 4:00 p.m. and anyone in need of this food is welcome. We the members do pay out of our pockets and through donations for this food.

It has been an exciting week for our people!! Chief Eye of Eagle had his proposal for this “Free Food Source Pantry” was accepted by the State of Florida Food Bank, (American Second Harvest Organization).

Several Tribal Council Elders and some Members helped him get his proposal ready and I’d like to congratulate all of them. I want to thank Lowe’s Home Improvement Center for their kind consideration in helping us with some of our building products to finish our food storage unit in making it ready for inspection for the food. I would also like to thank Scott Elkins and the Florida Food Bank in Lake City, Florida. They also committed themselves to our efforts in our completion of this difficult task.

We are also ready to start integrating new members into the Tribe. For my part I’ve been working on a new outreach for the protection of our heritage a process that will hopefully solve some of the long standing issues I (and many, many others) have with the current system. This has been a good week.

State Recognition

The Alapaha River Band of Cherokee Inc. has petitioned the United States Government and the State to be recognized as a Cherokee Indian Tribe in the State of Florida. We received a response back, which stated, that the matter is being turned over to the Department of Interior in Washington. We are still awaiting an answer from them. Below is a copy of the lettter and envelope from the White House.
